NEW ORLEANS, La. – It wasn’t pretty, but the Grambling State University baseball team plated three runs in the sixth inning off just one hit as the Tigers completed the Andre Dawson Classic with a 3-1 victory over Alabama State on Sunday night at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The Tigers (2-1) could not figure out Alabama State starter Breon Pooler through five innings, but when AJ Stinson took the mound in the bottom of the sixth, Grambling State took advance of four walks and a wild pitch to plate three runs.

Meanwhile, Jason Alvarez (1-0) threw 117 pitches in seven innings and fanned 10 batters to earn the victory.

How It Happened
Alabama State took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and the Hornets kept the slim advantage until the bottom of the sixth.

The Hornets went to the bullpen in the bottom of the frame as AJ Stinson replaced starter Breon Poole.

Drexler Macaay doubled down the line in left and moved to third on a wild pitch. Rafael Ramirez III walked and Isaiah Torres brought Macaay in to tie the game at 1 on a sacrifice fly to center. Michael Sookdeo walked as Ramirez advanced to second. Jalin McMillan followed with a walk to load the bases. Ace Felder took advantage of a four-ball walk as Ramirez scored. After a pitching change, Garrett Smith reached on a fielder’s choice as Phil Adams, who pinch ran for Sookdeo scored as the Tigers plated three runs in the inning to grab a 3-1 lead.

D’Quan Matthews and Ryan Evans pitched a solid eighth and ninth inning to preserve the victory.
