Golden Bears Earn First Win For Roberts

Miles Sports Information

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Miles jumped out to a big lead but had to hold on late as they defeated former conference for Stillman 5-4 Wednesday afternoon in the Golden Bears’ season opener. The victory was also the first for Ty Roberts, who took over the Miles program this season from longtime leader Kenneth Hatcher.

Roberts may have thought his team was going to have an easy time getting him that first win as Miles led 5-0. Reeves Brashear and Xavius Burden drove in runs with ground outs in the first inning, then sacrifice flies by Brashear and Gary Mason, Jr. in the third inning gave the Golden Bears a big cushion.

But Stillman stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the third against starter William Donahoo, who hit two batters that both came around to score. Other than that, Donahoo (1-0) worked his way out of trouble through six innings, allowing six hits, hitting three batters and walking two while also getting two strikeouts.

Dylan Johnson and Burden rolled through the seventh and eight but trouble lurked in the ninth. A one-out triple and ensuing RBI ground out brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. But Burden was able to strike out Anthony Rosario to earn the save.

Miles is back in action Friday when it plays a doubleheader against Morehouse in Oxford, Ala. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
