NORFOLK, Va. – Less than two months removed from their award-filled 2017 seasons as members of the Norfolk State baseball program, former Spartan pitchers Devin Hemmerich and Alex Mauricio have made their professional baseball debuts.
The pair – drafted just 22 picks apart in the 26th (Hemmerich) and 27th (Mauricio) rounds of last month’s Major League Baseball Draft – have both been assigned to rookie league Single-A teams within their respective organizations. Hemmerich has been assigned to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rookie/advanced Ogden Raptors Single-A club in Ogden, Utah. The lefty, who was the 2017 MEAC Pitcher of the Year and a third-team All-American, made his debut by pitching one scoreless inning and fanning two hitters in Ogden’s 4-3 loss to Grand Junction last Friday. Through two appearances, Hemmerich is 0-0 in three innings pitched with two runs allowed, four strikeouts and no walks.
Mauricio, a right hander, has been assigned to the New York Yankees rookie-level Gulf Coast League Yankees West Single-A team in Tampa, Fla. He made his debut on Tuesday, June 27, allowing one run in 1.2 innings pitched with one walk and one strikeout. Three nights later, the 2017 MEAC Player of the Year earned his first professional win by pitching a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout in a win over the GCL Braves.
Hemmerich and Mauricio were the Spartans’ first MLB draftees since 2007. NSU was the only HBCU with multiple draft picks this year.
