Florida Memorial Sports Information
The Florida Memorial University Lions baseball team (1-1) took their first road trip of the 2019 season on Friday to Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville (0-4).
Many baseball experts say that they key to winning baseball games is pitching and defense and the Lions proved that to be true in Friday night’s game against the Eagles. Christian Rivera took the mound as the Lions starter in this game and retired the first 10 batters that he faced, pitching 5 innings, striking out 5 batters, and recording the victory. Rivera was working on a no-hitter until the bottom of the 4th inning when Eagles, Christian Draper’s single ended the hope for an early season no-hitter. The Eagles got to Rivera again in the bottom of the 5th inning with 2 more hits that scored 2 runs. The Lions were able to get out of that inning and those were the only 2 runs that Eagles would score all night. The Eagles made good contact on the ball all night but the Lions defense was spectacular in support of the pitchers. The Lions pitching staff and the Lions defense combined to allowed only 5 hits on the night for the Eagles.
Offensively for the Lions, Darrin Brown continues to be a force for the Lions, hitting a double in the bottom of the first inning and reaching base on 2 walks. Jacquel Perry went 3-5 with 2 RBI and a home run. Raymond Guerrero went 2-4 with 2 RBI, 1 walk, and scored twice for the Lions. The Lions collectively were very aggressive at plate as they had 13 total hits. The aggressive approach at the plate does lead to more strike outs, the Lions struck out a total of 12 times. A big 4th inning for the Lions, propelled 4 Lions to cross home plate and give them a lead that ultimately was all that they would need. However, the Lions pushed 2 more runs across home plate in the 7th and 9th innings as insurance runs and took the victory 9-2.
The Lions will play 2 games on Saturday, starting at 12:00 noon.
