Fernando Diaz Hurls Complete-Game Shutout, Alabama A&M Gets Series Win At Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – Trying for its second conference series win in as many weeks, Alabama A&M needed a strong start on the mound from Fernando Diaz Jr.

The sophomore right-hander delivered.

Diaz went the distance, giving Alabama A&M its first complete-game shutout of the season as the Bulldogs topped Jackson State 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series.

Making his fifth start of the season, Diaz was sharp, holding Jackson State (6-11, 1-2 in SWAC) to nine hits walking just one. He struck out three.

Alabama A&M (4-13, 4-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Jonathan Smith II drove in Kyle Redmond. The Bulldogs stretched the cushion to two in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Dillon Roop that pushed Tyus O’Neal-El across the plate.

After scoring one in the seventh, Alabama A&M rallied for two runs in the top of the eighth on consecutive RBI hits from O’Neal-El and Roop.

Roop led Alabama A&M at the plate with two hits and two RBIs, while Smith had a hit and two RBIs.
