Talladega, Alabama – Solid defense, timely hitting, and a quality performance from an ace pitcher helped Edward Waters to a 3-0 win over GCAC and A. I. I. rival, Talladega the series opener on Saturday afternoon at Silsby Baseball Field on the campus of Talladega College.

Talladega pitcher Julian Fitts and EWC starter Jonathan Radomski (3-1) went back and forth in the first three innings of the game before anyone crossed home plate. That occurred in the EWC half of fourth inning, when shortstop Jordan Pontious hit an RBI single that scored center fielder Bryan Rodriguez. A Tornadoes throwing error two batters later brought in Pontious to stretch the Tiger lead to 2-0. Edward Waters brought one more run across in the very next inning when right fielder Will Boggs‘ sacrifice bunt brought home left fielder Joshua Jordan that gave the Tigers a 3-0. Things got interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning when Talladega’s first two batters reached base and ended Radomski’s afternoon. Reliever Manuel Guerra came in and threw a wild pitch which advanced the runners to second & third base respectively. Guerra was able to retire the next three batters in succession with two ground ball outs and the final fly out to Rodriguez which salted the victory away for the purple and orange.

Jordan led EWC at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a single, a triple, and a run scored. Radomski had his best afternoon of the season on the mound for the vistors. He went 8.0 innings, faced 27 batters, walked three and struck out four. Fitts took the loss for the Tornades, going 8.0 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks and six strikeouts.

Edward Waters improves their record to an even 8-8 and will conclude their three-game series with Talladega in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon starting at 12:00pm.
