Delaware State Take Game 2 In Split With Savannah State

Savannah, Ga. – Newcomer John Weglarz and Darnel Maisonet each had two hits and two runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a 9-3 victory over Savannah State in the second game of a doubleheader today.

Three pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead Savannah State to a 2-0 win in the opener.

In the seven-inning nightcap, the Hornets opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Weglarz stated the rally with a one-out walk. Maisonet followed with a triple to centerfield to score Weglarz with the game’s first run. Maisonet scored on a wild pitch to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

The Hornets added two runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The first run of the inning scored on a fielder’s choice by Rich Rountree and Weglarz singed in the second run.

Delaware State led 4-1 before tacking on three runs in the sixth.  Maisonet smacked a solo homer and Weglarz singled in his second run of the game in the inning.

The Hornets closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh.

Sean McGrath pitched four shutout innings to earn the win for Delaware State. He allowed five hits and struck out four before being relieved in the top of the fifth inning.

In the opener, Savannah State’s Trevor McKenna pitched six no-hit innings, striking out seven , to earn the win.

SSU’s Daryl Harper smacked a two-run homer off Hornet starter Lane DeLeon in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the only runs of the game.

The Hornets and Tigers will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.
