Dover, Del. – Delaware State took advantage of solid pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Marist at Soldier Field today. The Hornets won the first game 6-1 and completed the sweep with a rain-shortened 3-1 victory in the nightcap. Game two was called after Marist batted in the top of the fifth inning due to rain.

DSU took two of the three games in the weekend series to improve to 4-4 overall this season

In the seven-inning opener, Darnell Maisonet pitched four innings to earn the win and also smacked a three-run homer to highlight the Hornets’ six-run second inning.

Marist opened the scoring with a run off Maisonet in the top of the second inning.

DSU tied the game in the bottom of the second on a run scoring double by Rich Rountree. The Hornets opened up a 2-1 lead on a sac fly by Mark Herron. John Weglarz also singled in a second inning run to give the Hornets a two-run lead. There were two men on base with two outs when Maisonet launched a shot over the fence in right center to put DSU ahead 6-1. The homer was the first for the Hornets this season.

On the mound, Maisonet allowed three hits and one run, while striking out three and walking one to earn his first win of the season (1-1). Freshman Robert Shorts pitched the last three innings in relief of Maisonet to collect the save.

In the rain-shortened nightcap, starter Sean McGrath threw four solid innings and freshman Jeremy Carrow pitched a scoreless fifth to lead the Hornets.

DSU opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Tommy Jordan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a one-out single by Miquel Rivera.

After Marist tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, the Hornets regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Mark Herron provided the big hit in the fourth with a two-out single to score Todd Henry and Rivera.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday (Mar. 5) against Navy at Soldier Field. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
