Dover, Del. – Austin Bentley drove in four runs and Jaylen Zielecki knocked in three to lead Delaware State to a 15-5 victory over Coppin State in the series finale at Soldier Field today.

The Hornets led 15-0 before the Eagles scored five runs in their last at bat. The game was called after Coppin State batted in the seventh due to the MEAC’s 10-run rule.

The Hornets opened the scoring with five runs in the first inning. Zielecki had a two-run triple, Devin Beverly doubled in a run and Jared Gillis had a run-scoring hit in the inning.

DSU added three runs in the second to open up an 8-0 lead. The big hit in the inning was a two-run homer by first baseman Ciaran Devenney, the first of his career.

Delaware State led 9-0 before stretching the lead with three runs in the fourth. Zielecki drove in his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Hornets opened up a 15-0 lead when Bentley doubled in the Hornets’ three fifth-inning runs.

Nine Hornets hit safely in the game, including second baseman Kwestin Smith with three base knocks in four at bats.

Delaware State starter Garrett Lawson (2-2) threw five shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out five to earn the win.

The Hornets (7-12; 3-3 MEAC) will hit the road for their next five games, beginning with a visit to Rider on Wed. (Mar. 29). Game time is 3:30 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
