Durham, N.C. – The Delaware State baseball team scored four runs in the sixth inning and held off a late North Carolina Central rally to defeat the Eagles 4-3 in game two of a Sunday doubleheader at Durham Athletic Park today.

The seven-inning nightcap was scoreless for the first five innings before the Hornets broke through in the sixth.

Delaware State had just two hits before Arthur Burrell singled and stole second to lead off the sixth. After Burrell advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tommy Jordan, John Weglarz singled through the right side to score Burrell with the game’s first run. Weglarz stole second and Darnell Maisonet drew a walk to put Hornets at second and first with one out. After each runner moved up a base on a wild pitch, Miquel Rivera reached on an error, with Weglarz crossing the plate to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Maisonet later scored on a wild pitch and Rivera was chased home on an error to stretch DSU’s lead to 4-0.

Hornet starter Garrett Lawson was relieved after five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight but walking five. Jeremy Carrow relieved Lawson in the sixth with DSU holding a 4-0 lead.

Carrow allowed a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced, and Josh Brammell cleared the bases with a three-run homer to cut the Hornets’ lead to 4-3. The Hornet freshman recovered to retire the next three batters in order to avoid further damage.

Carrow put down the Eagles in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

In the opener, Maisonet struck out nine batters in five innings in his 2019 pitching debut, but the Hornets failed to generate much offense.  Maisonet struck out the side in the second inning and fanned two in the first, third and fourth.

North Carolina Central scored first in the opener when Vinny Bailey tagged Maisonet for a solo homer to right center in the bottom of the second inning.

DSU still trailed 1-0 when Maisonet doubled to lead off the fourth, but he was stranded at third with two outs.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs on two hits off Maisonet in the fifth to open up a 3-0 lead.

North Carolina Central opened up a 4-0 lead with an unearned run off Hornet reliever Sean McGrath in the seventh.

Delaware State got on the board with a run in the eighth inning. The Hornets were outhit 6-5, while each team left eight runners on base.
