Delaware State Hornets Defeat Coppin Eagles In Series Opener

Dover, Del. – Garrett Lawson threw eight solid innings to lead Delaware State to 5-1 victory over Coppin State in a MEAC North series opener at Soldier Field today.

Lawson allowed seven hits and one unearned run, while striking out nine and walking four to improve to 3-2 this season.

Third baseman Jared Gillis was three-for-five with a double and a run batted in, while Todd Henry and John Weglarz had two hits and a RBI each.

Coppin State opened the scoring with a run on a passed ball in the top of the first inning.

The Hornets evened the game with a run in the bottom of the first. Tommy Jordan reached base on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out single by Gillis to tie the game.

Delaware State scored two runs in the second to pull ahead for good.

Tripp Kimmell walked to lead off the second.  Todd Henry followed with a single, chasing Kimmell to third. The bases were loaded with one out when Kimmell scored on a sac fly by Henry to give the Hornets a 2-1. DSU opened up a 3-1 lead when Henry scored on a two-out single by Miquel Rivera.

Delaware State stretched its lead with two runs in the third inning.

Gillis doubled to lead off the inning and scored the Hornets’ fourth run on a one-out double by Kimmell. Henry followed with another double to score Kimmell, giving the Hornets a four-run cushion.

Lawson allowed two base runners in the fifth, but worked out of the jam. He left the game after retiring the Eagles in the top of the eighth.

Freshman Jeremey Carrow retired the side in the ninth to close out the game for the Hornets.

DSU snapped a five-game skid to improve to 6-12 overall and 1-3 in the MEAC. Coppin State fell to 9-8 and 3-1.

The teams will play a single on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and close out the series with a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday.
