Darnell Maisonet And Ciaran Devenney Power Delaware State To Sweep Of Coppin State Eagles

Dover, Del. – Darnell Maisonet and Ciaran Devenney combined for six hits and 10 runs batted in to lead Delaware State to a sweep of Coppin State in a MEAC North doubleheader at Soldier Field today.

The Hornets won the first game 8-4 and completed the sweep with a 12-8 victory in the seven-inning nightcap.

DSU has won four straight and 10 of its last 12 games to improve to 19-21 overall and 14-9 in the MEAC.

In the opener, Lane DeLeon threw six shutout innings and Darnel Maisonet drove in three runs to lead the Hornets. DeLeon allowed three hits and struck out six to improve to 4-4 this season.

Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning. Todd Henry and Jaylen Zielecki singled to lead off the inning. Maisonet followed with a double, scoring Henry and Zielecki to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Tyler Collins singled in Maisonet for the final run of the inning.

DSU tacked on four runs in the fifth to open up a 7-0 lead. Maisonet drove in his third run of the game on a two-out single, while Henry and Devenney also had run-scoring hits in the inning.

The Hornets opened up an 8-2 lead when Tyler Collins doubled in an eighth inning run.

Coppin State scored two runs in the top of the ninth to cut the DSU lead to four. The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, but Hornet reliever Travis Dill retired Andres Santana on a pop out to second to end the game.

The Hornets outhit Coppin State 13-8 in the opener.

Maisonet, Zielecki, Henry and Collins, along with Tommy Jordan and Evan Regez had two hits each for DSU in game one.

In the nightcap, Devenney was 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI, while Maisonet had a three-run double in the contest. The Hornets scored nine runs in the third inning to take control of the game.

Coppin State led 4-1 before DSU’s third inning explosion.

Devenney led off the inning with a home run to cut the Eagles’ lead to two. The next three batters singled to load the bases for Maisonet, who cleared the sacks with a double to left center to give the Hornets a 5-4 lead.

Jared Gillis had a two-run single, Jordan singled in a run and Regez drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the inning. The inning ended with the Hornets ahead 10-4.

Devenney smacked his second homer of the game and fourth of the season to stretch the lead to 12-4.

It marked the first time that a Hornet has homered twice in a game since Ron Farley in 2015.

Delaware State starter Sean McGrath (4-3) pitched 6.2 innings to earn the win.

The Hornets and Eagles will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Soldier. Sunday’s contest will also mark the MEAC finale for DSU.
