Coppin State Nazier McIlwain’s Home Run In 10th Inning Caps Baseball’s Win At Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITTSBURG, Md. – Nazier McIlwain led off the top of the 10th inning with a solo home run and the Eagles added another run in the frame as the Coppin State baseball team got a 4-2 victory at Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon. CSU improves to 12-8 on the season.

Trailing 2-1 going into the eighth, Coppin’s Derek Lohr led off with a double and crossed home after back-to-back singles by McIlwain and Justin Banks to tie the score.

Relief pitcher Bradley Tuttle got a 1-2-3 eighth inning and also faced the minimum in the ninth after giving up a walk but Conner Walker threw out a pinch runner trying to steal.

Following McIlwain’s go-ahead homer in the extra frame, Banks doubled and was sacrificed over to third. A hit batsman and walks issued to Ryan McWilliams and Walker gave CSU an insurance run.

Closer and career record holder Corey Treyes came into the game for the bottom half of the inning and allowed just a walk earn the save.

The Eagles had to rally from two runs down but cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth. Banks got it started by reaching on an error with two outs and scored after singles by Erik Crossman and Carlos Alviarez.

Carter Harbut allowed just one run on five hits in 5.0 innings and striking out four. Matt Urban then threw two hitless innings with two strikeouts before giving way to Tuttle who received the win.

The Eagles will host MEAC rival Norfolk State for three games, starting on Friday, March 28 at 3 pm.
