How It Happened

  •  Both teams threatened to score in the early innings and came up empty, but Coppin score three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.  Conner Walker drew a walk to start the inning and scored on Matt Day’s triple to straight-away center field.  Day then scored as Justin Banks lined a double off the wall in left center to make it a 2-0 game.  Banks then scored on a single by Carlos Alviarez.
  • The long inning took Aaron Rea out of rhythm and Delaware State tied the score with three runs on three hits and an error.
  • Coppin left the bases loaded in the fourth, but the Hornets also went scoreless in the fifth allowing CSU to score another three runs in the fifth.  Derek Lohr just missed a home run, but his two-out double to left drove in Alviarez who was running on contact.  Drew Thomas followed up with a two-run home run to center field, making it a 6-3 score.
  • Rea held DSU scoreless once again in the fifth and the Eagles made them pay as Alviarez cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field.  Alviarez tried to score after an errant throw from the outfield but was thrown out at home.
  • CSU loaded the bases once again in the inning but left them stranded and the Hornets got one of those runs back in the seventh, cutting the lead to 9-4.
  • The Eagles erupted for five runs on four hits to end the game after seven innings.  Back-to-back doubles by Banks and Erik Crossman scored the first run.  After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Corey Treyes was hit a pitch.  A wild pitch scored another and as Lohr drew another walk, the pitch hit the backstop and scored another run to make it 13-4.
  • DSU made a pitching change but Lohr stole second, and after a fly out, Walker hit a walk-off single to dead center, scoring Treyes from third.
