HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State’s baseball team defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 13-10 in a high-scoring affair Tuesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles have now won 65 games the last three-plus seasons, making this year’s seniors the winningest class in school-history.

Inside the Numbers

  • Justin Banks led five Coppin players with multi-hit games, going 3-for-5 with four RBI, a run and a walk.
  • Conner WalkerDerek LohrDrew Thomas and Ryan McWilliams also had two hits with Walker leading that group with a 2-for-3, three run and two RBI, including a monstrous home run in the sixth to give CSU the lead for good. Thomas went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two walks.
  • Coppin used four pitchers on the day with Branden Redfern getting the starting nod and he allowed just one earned run on three hits in 3.0 innings.  Matt Urban tossed the next three frames and gave up six earned runs.  Lucas Richards was credited with the win, allowing just two hits in a pair of scoreless innings.  Corey Treyes struck out all three batters he faced to pick up his fifth save of the season.

How It Happened

  • Coppin got out to an early 3-0 lead after the first as Nazier McIlwainDerek Lohr and Drew Thomas had back-to-back RBI base knocks with Lohr’s going for two bags.
  • Mount St. Mary’s cut it to a one-run game with a pair of runs in the second and it took the lead at 5-3 with three runs in the fourth.
  • The Eagles regained the lead in their half of the inning with four runs despite just one hit.  CSU loaded the bases with no out as Thomas drew a walk, followed by a Ryan McWiliams’ single and Conner Walker was hit by a pitch. After a pair of outs, Justin Banks walked to score Thomas.  A wild pitch scored McWilliams and tied the score at five. A walk to Corey Treyes loaded the bases once again and a throwing error allowed both Banks and Walker to score.
  • Mount answered with four runs of its own to take a 9-7 lead in the fifth but Coppin tied it up at nine in its half on a two-run single by Banks, scoring McWilliams and Walker.
  • The guests were the first to ten runs as it took a 10-9 lead with a run in the sixth but the Navy & Gold erupted for another four runs in their half.  Thomas started a two-out rally with a walk and scored to tie the game on a triple by McWilliams.  Walker followed up with a two-run bomb to left field, making it a 12-10 score.
  • After a walk and an error, Banks drove in an insurance run with a single to right field to finalize the scoring.
  • Lucas Richards came in to start the seventh and allowed a leadoff single but faced the minimum the rest of the way with the help of a 6-4-3 double play to end the eighth.
  • Treyes then struck out all three batters she faced to seal the win.
