Coppin State Baseball Earns Series Win With 11-5 Victory At Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Coppin State’s baseball team earned its first-ever series win against Savannah State with an 11-5 victory over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.

How It Happened

  • Savannah State took an early, 3-0 lead with three runs in the first but Coppin State took the lead with four runs in the second and never looked back.
  • Carlos Alviarez got the rally started with a two-out walk and advanced to second on Marcos Castillo’s single.  Conner Walker and Corey Treyes drove in runs with back-to-back singles, and following a walk issued to Drew Thomas which loaded the bases, Derek Lohr gave Coppin the lead with a two-run single to left.
  • A sacrifice fly by Alviarez in the third gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead and Devin Rivera Ozuna got a 1-2-3 inning in the Tigers half of the inning.
  • Coppin put another crooked number on the scoreboard with five runs in the fourth, including RBIs by Erik Crossman, Alviarez and Walker.  Treyes then broke the game open with a two-run single to right, scoring Justin Banks and Castillo.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the fifth as Rivera Ozuna got another 1-2-3 inning on the hill, increasing a streak to seven-straight outs.
  • Walker drove in Banks with a double in the sixth, but Savannah got that run back in its half, making it a 11-4 ballgame after six frames.
  • The Tigers were able to get a run off relief pitcher Matt Urban in the seventh but Anthony Martinez held them in check the rest of the way to give the Eagles a series victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Justin Banks recorded three hits, including a double, and two runs scored in his CSU debut, matching Conner Walker with a team-high three base knocks. Walker also doubled and drove in three runs while also drawing a walk.
  • Corey TreyesDerek Lohr and Erik Crossman all had two hits apiece with Treyes driving in three runs, Lohr two and Treyes with another.
  • Marcos Castillo joined Banks and Crossman with two runs scored while going 1-for-3 with two walks.
  • Devin Rivera Ozuna earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out six in 6.0 innings of work.
  • Matt Urban gave up a run in his lone inning of work before giving way to Anthony Martinez who threw a pair of scoreless innings.

Up Next: Coppin is scheduled to host Albany for three games on February 23-24 at Blandair Park in Columbia, Md.  A 12 pm doubleheader will be played on Saturday followed by a 12 pm first pitch the following afternoon.
