Inside the Numbers

  • Matt Day led all players with three hits and three runs scored from his leadoff position.  The freshman from College Park, Md., also stole a pair of bases and played a steady centerfield.
  • Justin Banks was the only other Eagles player to have a pair of hits as he went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs, an RBI and three walks, two of which were intentional.
  • Nazier McIlwain also drew three walks while Erik Crossman went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and two walks.
  • Conner Walker had a team-high three RBI while Carlos Alviarez drove in a pair of runs.
  • Jahmon Taylor got the victory, fanning nine in 5.1 innings while allowing three earned runs.
  • Lucas Richards struck out four in his 2.1 innings while Bradley Tuttle struck out two while allowing a run in the final 1.1 frames.

How It Happened

  • Norfolk State recorded a run on a fielder’s choice in the first but Coppin State quickly tied it up in the bottom half on a RBI bunt single by Erik Crossman after Justin Banks drew his first intentional walk of the game.
  • Despite a pair of errors, Jahmon Taylor escaped the second inning without a run and the Eagles took advantage as Nick Martinez doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error to take a 2-1 lead.
  • After Taylor fanned a pair in the third, CSU tacked on another run as Conner Walker grounded out to first, allowing Banks to score after he doubled to dead-center field earlier in the frame.
  • Taylor struck out the side in the fourth, and this time the Eagles erupted for seven runs on five hits to go up 10-1. Coppin loaded the bases after a walk and back-to-back singles before Nazier McIlwain grounded out to score the first run. Banks once again intentionally walked to load the bases and the runners all advanced on a wild pitch to make it a 5-1 game. Crossman also walked to once again load the bases before Carlos Alviarez singled up the middle to drive in a pair, making it a 7-1 game.
  • Walker then doubled to the gap in left center, driving in two more, before a two-base knock by Drew Thomas scored Walker.
  • Both teams went scoreless in the fifth but Norfolk got three runs on Taylor to end his day with one out. Lucas Richards then came in and struck out both batters he faced to keep it a 10-4 game.
  • Coppin got one of the runs back in its half of the sixth but Norfolk scored one on Richards in the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-5.
  • McIlwain led off the seventh with a walk before Banks lined a shot down the right field line for a double and McIlwain scored all of the way from first to extend the lead back to seven runs.
  • Richards got two outs in the eighth before being replaced by Bradley Tuttle who made Norfolk look foolish on a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
  • Matt Day led off the bottom of the eighth with his third hit of the game but was stranded.  The Spartans only mustered one run in the ninth as Tuttle shut the door.
