Two Clark Atlanta University baseball players – Anthony Nettles and Jordan Johnson – have been named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Preseason All-Conference second team, the SIAC announced Wednesday.

Nettles, a starting pitcher from Morrow, Ga., was fifth in the SIAC in earned run average (4.20) and was 8-5 last season. Opposing hitters only hit .252 against Nettles, which was also fifth in the conference.  Nettles was also second in innings pitched, fourth in strikeouts (third in striking out 23 hitters looking) and second in wins with eight.  Nettles, a junior, also hit .257 last season and was 14-of-14 in steal attempts.

It’s the second big honor for Nettles who earlier this month was also a second team pick for the HBCU Black College Nines’ Elite Preseason team.

Also named to the Preseason All-SIAC second team was short stop Jordan Johnson.  A senior from Conyers, Ga., Johnson hit .277 for CAU last season, with 36 hits, 29 runs batted in and was fifth in the conference in runs scored.  Johnson was also only caught once in 14 steal attempts.  Johnson hit four home runs and had seven doubles for the Panthers.  Johnson had a fielding percentage of .944 with 121 putouts at short stop last season.

As a relief pitcher, Johnson had a 4.70 ERA, good for seventh in the SIAC. He struck out 39 hitters and had two saves.
The Panthers open the season at home on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host Rust College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. They play again on Feb. 2 with a single game at 1 p.m. The Panthers play their home games at Bill Evans Field in College Park.
