Claflin Sweeps Lane In SIAC Doubleheader

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University baseball team swept Lane College, 8-2 and 17-0, in their 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opener.  With the wins, the Panthers secure the SIAC series win.

The teams will meet again in the final game of the series on Sunday, Mar. 17.  First pitch is set for 12 noon at Historic Mirmow Field.

Jalen Sprull was the offensive threat for on the day for Claflin, who improved to 6-18 overall and 2-0 in the SIAC.  Sprull finished with three walks and one run in game one and three runs, one hit, a grand slam homerun, and five RBIs in game two.

Darrell Langston also homered on the day, a two-run shot, in game two.  Langston finished the day with four hits, two runs, and four RBIs.

Johnathan Parnell II, who is second on the team in hitting, finished the day with three hits and four runs.

Lane received hits from Konard Yancie, DeShawn Cole, Keishaun Clark, Chris O’Neal and Joel Ballard in game one and the lone hit for game two came from pinch-hitter Julius Morgan in the top of the ninth.

Claflin scored one run in the first and one in the second to go ahead 2-0 after two complete innings in the opening game.

Lane used two hits in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 2-all.

With one out and one on, Eric McElveen hit a double to right-center to score Sprull for the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Panthers tacked on five additional runs in the inning for the six run advantage.  The Dragons was held scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Torriun Towers was the winning pitcher of game one, while Treviz Brown was picked up the loss for Lane.

Claflin bats remained hot in the second game.

After holding Lane scoreless in the top of the first, the Panthers placed three of the first four players on base, via two hits and a hit-by-pitch.

With three on and one out, Sprull hit a grand slam to give Claflin a 7-0 lead after the first.

The Panthers scored two more runs in the bottom of the third off the two-run homer by Langston.

Claflin scored four runs in the fifth and four in the sixth en route to its 17-0 win.

Cleveland Westbrook recorded 11 strikeouts with the one hit and two walks in the complete game win to improve to 4-1 on the season.

DeShawn Cole was the losing pitcher in game two.
