Orangeburg, S.C.– The Claflin University baseball team defeated Bluefield State twice, 17-2 and 4-3, in an NCAA Division II non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Historic Mirmow Field.

With the sweep, Claflin improved to 3-11 on the season, while Bluefield State dropped to 2-6.

In the first game, the Panthers offense came alive in backing a solid pitching performance from Keamond Eison.

Eison, 1-3, allowed Bluefield State just two runs on eight hits over six innings of work.

He threw just 69 pitches with no walks.

Tanner Muovich, 0-3, took the loss for Bluefield State.

Claflin, which tagged four Bluefield State pitchers for 13 hits, was led at the plate by Darrell Langston with a pair of home runs. He finished the game with 3 RBIs.

Other top hitters for the Panthers included Elliott Melton with three hits and four RBIs; Jonathan Parnell, II collected two hits and two RBIs; followed by Chase Henderson and Silvaris Hooks with a hit and RBIs each.

Drew D’Angelo and Peyton Durham had two hits and drove in a run to lead Bluefield State.

In the second game, Jamal Devine pitched five strong innings and Dillon Parker came in relief and shutdown Bluefield State in the seventh-inning as Claflin won.

Devine, 1-0 gave up five hits, two runs and faced just 19 batters (four over the limit).

After Bluefield State cut the Panthers lead to 4-3 with a run in the sixth off Neftali Reyes, Parker came into the game in the last inning and retired three of the four batters he faced.

Melton led Claflin in game two with two runs and a RBI.

Jeturi Brown, Rashad Webster and Parnell drove in a run apiece for Claflin.

Bluefield State was led by Durham with two-run homer.

Bo Williams, 1-1, suffered the loss for Bluefield State.

The teams will meet in the series finale Sunday at Historic Mirmow Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
