Raleigh, N.C. – The Claflin University baseball team spilt a pair non-conference games Sunday against Saint Augustine’s University (1-4, 17-8) after being swept by the Falcons on Saturday (13-1, 13-4) in a double-header.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak to start the season for Claflin, now 1-7. Saint Augustine’s is now 4-6.

In winning for the first time this season, Claflin received a strong pitching performance from Torriun Towers, who went six innings, to pick up the win.

The Panthers were paced in game two by Rashad Webster who was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs, Michael Kendrick who had two runs and four RBIs and Jonathan Parnell, Jr. had two runs with two RBIs.

In the opening game on Sunday, Saint Augustine’s broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth inning en route to the victory.

Claflin had taken a 1-0 lead when Rashad Bivens scored on a ground out by Craig Hopkins in the fourth.

The Panthers managed just one hit in the game, a double by Langston to score Bivens.

Hector Pichardo led the Falcons with a hit and 2 RBIs.

Marquis Ingram, 1-2, picked up the win.

Keamond Eison, 0-2, was the loser for Claflin, going 5.2 innings given up six hits and four runs.

In Saturday’s first game at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg, Timothy Carter drove in seven of the Falcons 13 runs in the win. Carter was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Ruben Pinero had three hits and 2 RBIs for Saint Augustine.

Hopkins produced the only run for the Panthers, a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning that brought home Bivens.

Jeturi Brown led Claflin offensively with three hits. Langston added two for the Panthers.

Ricky Rice, 1-1, picked up the win for the Falcons.

Eric Dubose, 0-1, suffered the loss for Claflin, allowing 10 hits and nine earned runs over five innings.

In the second game, St. Augustine pounded four Panther pitchers for 12 hits en route to the win.

Alexis Garcia and Pichardo led the Falcons with two hits and 3 RBIs each.

Claflin scored its first run of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Hopkins.

In the sixth inning, the Panthers scored another run off a RBI single from Langston.

Claflin added two more runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Webster and Bivens.

Harold Smith, 0-1, suffered the loss for the Panthers, giving up six hits and eight runs in 3-2/3 innings.

Ali Nunn, 0-1, was the winning pitcher for the Falcons.

Claflin returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 15) at Coker College in Hartsville for at 1 p.m. The Panthers will host Florida Southern University this weekend in a three-game series (Feb. 17-19) at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.
