Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader From Georgia State

NORMAL — Julio Nunez drove in Patrick Dodson with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Bulldogs beat Georgia State 10-9 to complete a sweep of their doubleheader Tuesday. The Bulldogs won the opener 3-1.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs held a 7-4 lead going into the ninth when the Panthers scored five runs to take a 9-7 lead.

A&M’s Austin Hulsey, in as a pinch-hitter, doubled in the bottom of the ninth to score Ben Lott and Nunez and tie the score at 9-9.

Josh Burchell, who came on in relief in the ninth, shut down the Panthers in the 10th, enabling the Bulldogs to win in the bottom of the inning.

Georgia State took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Bulldogs went up 2-1 in the second inning on RBI singles from Trae Nelson and Dustin Dhanani.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the third inning, the Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead on Dylan Payne’s RBI single and back-to-back doubles from Brandyn Crutcher and Dodson.

The Panthers cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth inning before Payne doubled and scored on Nelson’s single for a 5-3 A&M lead. The Bulldogs made it 7-3 in the seventh when Payne singled with one out to score Dodson and Lott, who had doubled.

Georgia State scored once in the eighth and exploded for five runs in the ninth to take a 9-7 lead.

Payne finished the game with four hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Dodson had three hits, also including a double, and he scored three runs; Lott had two singles and a double to go with two runs; and Nunez had a pair of singles – including the game-winning hit – and he scored two runs.

In the opener, the Bulldogs struck first when Crutcher doubled in the first inning and scored on Nunez’s double to leftfield.

The Panthers tied it up in the fifth inning but the Bulldogs went ahead 2-1 when Dodson drove in Nelson, who had singled.

Andrew Utterback scored the final run of the game on Justen Folger’s double in the sixth inning.

Starter Caleb Bowen got the win as he pitched five innings, giving up the one run along with two hits while walking three and striking out one.

Folger and Nunez each had a single, double and RBI and Nelson singled twice for the Bulldogs.
