LORMAN, Miss. – With the mission of providing financial assistance through dedicated services and contributions, the Alcorn State University baseball program assembled its first-ever Dugout Club this spring.

“The grand project we all would like to see come to fruition is the hitting facility,” said Leroy McClain, an Alcorn alum who was named president of the club. “I had an opportunity back in the summer to meet head coach [Bretton] Richardson, and after our conversation I was compelled to do more for the program.”

Since then, McClain put together a group of officers to get the ball rolling. His staff included vice president Sean Barna, secretary Terri Barna, treasurer James Stubbs and parliamentarian Stephanie Carroll.

In addition to the hitting facility, the club will engage in fundraising activities to improve immediate needs such as maintenance on and around the field and better team apparel.

The club will also look to increase parent and alumni involvement and create a more collaborative culture. This year’s goal is to increase parent contributions by 100 percent.

“Having the alumni show their support for the program will be huge. Not just financially but knowing that they are with us wherever we are. This is something I hope will last for years to come,” Richardson said.

McClain and his staff are currently working to establish the first-ever Diamond Darlings support group. The members will serve as “bat girls” during baseball games and help manage concession stands.

“We believe our goals can be accomplished by the generosity from former players and alumni. Therefore, we will make every attempt to contact all alumni across the state of Mississippi and the nation to do their part in changing the face of the baseball program for years to come,” McClain said.

LETTER FROM HEAD COACH BRETTON RICHARDSON
“Dear Alcorn baseball fans,

I hope this message finds you and your families in good health and high spirits. As the head coach of the Alcorn State Braves baseball program, I want to take a moment to invite you as well as your friends and families to take part in the inaugural year of our Alcorn Braves Dugout Club.

Over the past year we were able to make several improvements to our facilities. These improvements include a new outfield fence, dugout upgrades, new bullpens, infield tarp and there is a new scoreboard being installed as I draft this letter. Even with all of these improvements, we still have a number of facility and equipment improvements/upgrades that are needed. The purpose of the Dugout Club is to assist us in seeing our vision of a hitting facility, locker room, and equipment and apparel purchases come to fruition. We intend to achieve great things with the collective financial commitments of alumni, family and friends.  We cannot thank those of you who are able and willing to support your Alcorn Braves Baseball team enough.

We are working hard this fall to put a quality product on the field that you all can be proud of.  Personally, I am very proud of all of our baseball players.  We had a very successful year in the classroom last year which was made evident by having 15 of our baseball players selected to be All SWAC Student Athletes. We hope to improve upon that number this year.

We are determined as a coaching staff to mold Alcorn Baseball into a program that is not only competitive in the SWAC, but competitive in our out of conference games as well. Your contributions and support will help us achieve our goal of winning a SWAC Championship while providing our student athletes with the tools for success.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of supporting our program. We cannot overstate the importance of your support. We sincerely hope to see you at the Rat McGowan Stadium this spring.

Sincerely,

Coach Brett Richardson
Alcorn State University
Head Baseball Coach”
