Orangeburg, SC- The Big Blues had a three game series down in Orangeburg, SC against HBCU Claflin University. The first two games did not go Bluefield State’s way losing the 1st 17-2 and the second 4-3 in a nail bitter.

Tanner Muovich started game one and had a solid 1st inning. But in the second, the Panthers jumped on Muovich, scoring 6 runs. Brandon Chandler, Romero Cartwright and Sam Harris all came on in relief throughout the game. The Panthers scored 17 runs on 13 hits. Muovich was able to get 3 strikeouts in his outing and Cartwright added a 4th in game one. Peyton Durham went 2-3 with an RBI scoring Drew D’Angelo. D’Angelo was also able to tally an RBI on a Fielder’s Choice in the 6th.

Game 2 saw the reigns get handed over to Bo Williams. Williams pitched very well in game 2 only giving up 4 runs on 5 hits. Two of those runs were unearned as the Big Blues committed 3 errors during the game. Addison Meeks took over in relief and continued the impressive pitching performance by the Big Blues. He went 1.1 innings giving up 1 walk and 1 strike out.

Offensively, Peyton Durham had another excellent game. Durham went 1-4 but the 1 hit was a two run bomb to actually give BSC the lead in the 3rd inning. Bubba Smith was able to add Bluefield State’s 3rd run in the 6th scoring Jordan Wilson. Since it was a double header on Saturday, the game was only 7 innings and the Big Blues simply ran out of at-bats to complete their comeback.

However, in Game three on Sunday, the Big Blues did complete their comeback, winning 13-8 after being down 7-2 after 3 innings. Cole Blocker was tapped as the starter in game three, getting his 1st start of the season. Addison Meeks then came on in relief and pitched an excellent game. Meeks, who picked up his 2nd win of the season, went 3.1 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits and 1 strike out. Brandon Wortkoetter came on to finish the game, pitching the final three innings.

The comeback really came about in the 7th inning and started with a single to Chaz Rutherford who scored Logan Wirston and Jordan Wilson. Justin Bowler was up next and completed his 2 hit night with a single scoring Billy O’Hara. Chase Chambers and Drew D’Angelo added two more hits in the inning and scored 3 more runs. The Big Blues continued their momentum in the 8th when Peyton Durham singled scoring Justin Bowler. Durham and Chase Chambers would later score that inning on a passed ball to give Bluefield State 13 runs.
