WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-0) got the 2019 season underway in impressive fashion when the team took a 13-3 win over the Limestone Saints (2-4), Friday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. The Rams broke out their bats and played some quality defense to claim their first win of the season.
The Rams were especially impressive at the plate when the team totaled 13 runs in the game. As a team, the Rams notched 11 hits, including four extra base hits in the game. Sophomore pitcher Cole Parks led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with a five RBI and two runs scored. He also recorded a home run as well. Sophomore Nick Williams added a three-for-five performance with a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored.
It was in the third inning when the Rams first broke out as they scored five runs in the inning. Redshirt-sophomore centerfielder E.P. Reese got things started when he hit an RBI double to score junior catcher Shannon Glover. Senior second base Nick Williamsfollowed the effort with an RBI single to score Reese. It was Parks who really set things off when he hit a three-run home run to put the Rams on top, 5-0. WSSU allowed two runs to the Saint, but the Rams answered in a big way later in the game. In the fifth inning, Williams hit a two-run home run of his own to leave the rams on top, 7-2. It was in the seventh inning that the Rams really stepped things up with six runs. Williams hit an RBI single that was followed by a two-RBI double by Parks. Sophomore first base Luke Spivaadded an RBI single to score Parks once again and then he later scored on a Saint fielding error. The effort gave the Rams a 13-2 lead before the Rams allowed an eighth inning run to the Saints to leave the final score 13-3 and to take the win.
Parks (1-0) also had a great day on the mound as he got the start and the pitching win. He went 7.0 innings with two runs allowed (two earned) and 12 strikeouts. Freshman Layton Helmsadded two-third innings with a run allowed (one earned). Junior James Martin closed the game with an inning. He allowed no runs on no hits.
With the win, the Rams open the 2019 season with a 1-0 record. The Rams and the Saints will return to action, tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. single game.
