Grambling, La – The Grambling State University baseball team used a five-run second inning to propel the Tigers to a 10-4 victory over Prairie View A&M in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener on Friday night at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park

Grambling State (5-5 overall, 1-0 SWAC) trailed 1-0 after one inning and 3-0 in the middle of the second before exploding for five runs to grab a 5-3 advantage.

Isaiah Torres led off the big inning with a double to left center and scored by Rafael Ramirez doubled down the right field line. Trevin Bolden followed with a walk and both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Cameron Shannon brought Bolden in to score on a sacrifice fly to center to cut the Panthers’ lead to 3-2.

Chris Perez walked to put runners on the corners with one down and Chris Campbell delivered a double down the right field line to plate Bolden as Perez stopped at third. Perez scored on a passed ball as Campbell advanced to third. D’Quan Matthews picked up a sacrifice fly to left to plate Campbell, giving the Tigers a 5-3 advantage,

Grambling State added a run in the third on a solo homer by Ramirez, but Prairie View A&M (1-5, 0-1) cut the margin to 6-4 with a run in the top half of the fourth.

The score remained 6-4 until the seventh when Grambling State struck for three runs on three hits and took advantage of a Panthers error.

Campbell drew a walk to begin the frame and advanced to second on a ground out by Matthews. Marshawn Taylorreached on an infield hit and stole second to put two runners into scoring position. Richard Ortiz singled through the left side to plate Campbell and Taylor as Ortiz advanced to second on the play. Ortiz came in to score the third and final run of the inning on a two-out base hit by Ramirez, giving Grambling State a 9-4 lead.

The Tigers picked up an insurance run in the eighth in capturing their first SWAC win.

Inside the Numbers
· Grambling State finished with nine hits and left seven on base.
· Rafael Ramirez went 3-for-4, with three RBIs and two runs scored.
· Marshawn Taylor and Chris Campbell each registered two hits, with Campbell scoring twice.
· Richard Ortiz and Isaiah Torres recorded one hit apiece.
· Raul Baduel pitched (1-1) 6.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, with four walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win.
· Ryan Evans and Daniel Wilson combined to pitch 2.2 innings in relief, with both picking up one strikeout.
· Prairie View A&M finished with five hits and stranded five base runners.
· Jayln Baker led the Panthers at the plate by going 2-for-4, with a pair of runs scored.
· Darrien Williams (1-1) took the loss as he was tagged for six runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and four walks in six innings of work.
· Tracy Warren, Kaelon Woods, Xavier Yarbrough and Jerson Hardit pitched in relief.

News & Notes
· The Tigers remained perfect in home games this season (3-0).
· Grambling State went 4-3 last season against Prairie View A&M, including an 8-6 loss in the SWAC Tournament that eliminated the Tigers.
· Grambling State went 1-2 at home last season against Prairie View A&M, but picked up a series sweep of the Panthers.

Grambling State will conclude the SWAC series on Saturday with a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M. The two-nine inning games will begin at 2 p.m. at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
