Macon, Ga. – Jeremy Adams earned a victory in his Bethune-Cookman debut and senior captain Jameel Edney drove in a pair of runs as the Wildcats (1-2) earned acting Head Coach Barrett Shaft his first victory as skipper, 8-6, against Mercer University Sunday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Edney started the scoring early when he took a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a leadoff dinger.

Later in the frame, Nate Sterijevski singled through the left side to bring home Danny Rodriguez, who reached initially on a hit-by-pitch, and the Wildcats scored a pair in the first.

BCU added another in the second with station-to-station baseball. Josten Heronopened the inning with a single, and stole second when Zach Spivey struck out. Heron advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Edney grabbed his second RBI of the day on a groundout to short that plated Heron.

Mercer (2-1) scored its first run off Adams with a bases-loaded walk to Alex Crotty. However Adams ended the inning without a hit on a Davi Posas fielder’s choice.

Adams (1-0) and Bear starter Kevin Coulter (0-1) settled in over the next few frames, as Coulter was eventually saddled with the loss with three earned off five hits in four innings, with a pair of walks and five strikeouts.

Adams showed resolve in his final inning. With the Bears batting in the fifth, he induced a bases-loaded fly out to center by Crotty. He finished with one run off three hits in five innings. He walked five batters and registered three strikeouts.

The Wildcats added to their lead with a sixth inning Spivey single off MU reliever Nick Spear to score Kyle Corbin, who doubled earlier in the frame.

BCU reliever Branden Frank surrendered a pair of runs in the seventh before Joseph Calamita closed the inning with an Alex Hanson strikeout swinging.

Each side added a run in the eighth, as Corbin singled to score pinch-runner Clarence Carter and Sean McDermott answered with a single to plate Brandon Michie off Ivan Coutinho.

Insurance was key in the ninth, as the Wildcats scored two off Andrew Cane and another from Zach Graveno.  Edney began with a single and two. Batters later, Danny Rodriguezwas given an intentional pass. Graveno entered to replace Cane, and a wild pitch allowed each batter to move into scoring position. Sterijevski reached second on a fielding error at third, and both Edney and Rodriguez crossed the plate. Pinch-hitter Ian Claudio drove in Sterijevski with a single through the hole at second.

The Bears attempted a one-out rally with a Hanson two-run homer, but Coutinho bounced back to retire Posas looking and concluding the ballgame with a JT Thomas groundout to third.
