DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Josten Heronblasted a solo walk-off home run to catapult Bethune-Cookman to a 3-2 victory against Volusia County rival Stetson Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
After Brandon Wilkes (2-0) added strikeouts four and five to keep the score tied, Heron took the second pitch he saw from Vlad Nunez (1-2) over the left field wall and ended the game on his first dinger of the spring.
With the win, the Wildcats (9-12) picked up their first 2019 mid-week victory.
BCU beat the Hatters (8-12) to the board with a second inning RBI single from Clarence Carter.
Stetson took the lead in the fourth. Noah Dickerson tied the game on a sacrifice fly to right center, and Jorge Arenas’ check swing made contact for an RBI dribbler to first. Both runs were charged to Bryan Melendez, the fourth BCU pitcher on a planned staff day.
Every hurler, sans Wilkes’ two innings of five strikeouts, one hit, and a walk, threw one frame. Isaak Gutierrez, Alec Mendez, Jordan Pinto, Jake Simon, and Jordan Delucia all helped BCU with scoreless work.
The ‘Cats tied the game in the seventh after Heron led off the inning with a triple. SU reliever Austin Bogart bounced a throw home that allowed Heron to score.
BCU hosts defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion North Carolina A&T State this weekend for a three-game set. First pitch is Friday at 6 p.m.
