COLUMBIA, S.C. – Jacob Lagos pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout in the first game as the Benedict College Tigers rallied to take the second game to sweep a baseball doubleheader over Saint Augustine’s College in their home opener on Mondayafternoon.

Lagos gave up three hits, walked two and struck out eight for the mound win. Benedict improves to 2-3 on the season, avenging a doubleheader loss to Saint Augustine’s on Sunday.

In the second game, the Tigers trailed 7-4 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, David White Jr. and Javier Santiago were each hit by a pitch. They both came home on a single by Fate YoungJoseph Macaluso tied the game with an RBI double. Skyler Sabado followed with a single to left field to score the game-winning run.

Young went 3-for-3 in the second game. Keati Buchanan picked up the win in relief and Christopher Harper pitched a three-up, three-down seventh inning for the save.

In the first game, Harper had an RBI single in the second inning. In the third inning, Yancy Freeny was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He came home on a groundout by Andrew McCoyAnthony Johnson added an RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead. Macaluso blasted a two-run homer in the sixth, and Bradon O’Connor brought home an insurance run with an RBI single.

Benedict stole nine bases in the two games, giving the Tigers 21 stolen bases on 23 attempts in the first five games. During Sunday’s doubleheader against Saint Augustine’s in Cary, N.C., the Tigers surpassed 2,000 total bases in coach Selwyn Young‘s nine seasons.

The Tigers travel to USC Beaufort on Wednesday for a 2 p.m.contest.
