Benedict Baseball Team Opens Season With Sweep Over Bluefield State

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team opened the 2017 season with a doubleheader sweep over Bluefield State College on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field. 

In the first game, Benedict had a pair of five-run innings to take an 11-5 victory. The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead in the second game and Robert Troiano III pitched a three-up, three-down seventh inning for an 8-7 victory. 

David White Jr. had a pair of home runs on the day, a solo shot to center field in the first game and a two-run blast to center field in the second game. Andrew McCoy had a two-run homer in the first game and added two more RBIs in the second game. 

McCoy’s two-run triple in the second inning of the second game gave Benedict a 4-1 lead. Bluefield State tied the game 5-5 in the fourth inning. The Tigers took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Troiano was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball. Joel Manzano singled to score Troiano. 

Bluefield State scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Armando Valentin reached on an error and White followed with his game-winning homer. 

The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday with a home game against UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m.
