ATLANTA – The Albany State University baseball team held off a late rally to earn an SIAC series sweep over Morehouse College Saturday afternoon at Perkenson Park.
ASU took Friday’s doubleheader 11-8 and 12-6, before edging the Maroon Tigers 8-7 in today’s 9-inning contest.
In their final at bat of the series finale, the Maroon Tigers trailed ASU by three runs. A one out, RBI single and a bases loaded walk scored two for Morehouse and the tying run lingered at third base. The Golden Rams got the second out of the inning when Amyr Smith reached on a fielder’s choice; Trey McMillan hurled the ball to Lawrence Hyde for the force out at home plate.
ASU secured the win Roos Barnes lined out to the short stop to end the game.
The Golden Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler Morris got the Golden Rams on the scoreboard first when his RBI single drove in Nic Griggs. Ryan McLendon followed with a SAC fly to right field and Quantico Dodson-Williams cleared the bases with a RBI triple.
The Maroon Tigers put up their first run in the second inning when Jared Maner hit a lead-off homer and Morehouse would pull in front 5-3 with a four-run, three hit turn in their half of the third.
After Dodson-Williams drew a walk to start the fourth, he advanced on a sacrifice bunt then stole third base. Chasen Roulhac brought Dodson-Williams in on an RBI groundout to second to cut Morehouse’s lead to one.
With two on in the eighth, the Tigers opted to intentionally walk Riliani Famila and load the bases. Avery Roth then reached on a bases clearing error by the short stop and the Golden Rams moved in front 7-5. ASU scored one more in the top of the ninth for a three run advantage.
Albany State (19-15, SIAC 10-4) will return home on Tuesday when they play host to Georgia College. Game time is scheduled for 4pm at West Campus Field.
