Armando Valentin’s Walk-Off Homer Lifts Benedict Over Lincoln, 9-8

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Armando Valentin hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to help lead the Benedict College Tigers to a 9-8 baseball victory over the Lincoln University Lions on Monday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Lincoln, now 3-5, had reclaimed the lead in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs. Darian Williams led off the bottom of the ninth with a sharp single up the middle. Valentin followed with a home run over the left-field fence for the game winner.

Benedict improves to 4-2 overall.

Lincoln scored two runs in the first and added another run in the sixth for a 3-0 lead. Joel Manzano had an RBI double in the seventh to bring home Benedict’s first run. Yancy Freeny had a two-out, bases-loaded single to score David White Jr. Andrew McCoy followed with a double to left field that cleared the bases and gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead.

The Lions scored three runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead, 6-5. Benedict pulled back ahead in the bottom of the eighth when Christopher Floyd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score White. Freeny walked with the bases still loaded to score Robert Troiano III.

Lincoln went back up 8-7 with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Troiano, who came in to pitch in the eighth inning, picked up the win on the mound.

Benedict and Lincoln will meet again at 11 a.m. Tuesday to wrap up their series.
