LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program heads to Oxford on Wednesday afternoon to battle the 2019 Super Regional qualifying Ole Miss Rebels at 4:00 p.m. inside Oxford University Stadium at Swayze Field.

Alcorn (2-1) began the season at the Andre Dawson Tournament against SWAC Western Division opponents for the fifth consecutive year and finished the weekend at 2-1 for the third time in those five seasons.

The Baseball Braves were scoring runs in bunches as the purple and gold averaged 9.0 runs per game, the best mark in the conference through three games. Alcorn also smacked five doubles (second in SWAC) with an on-base percentage of .381 (third in SWAC).

The boys from Lorman were no slouches on the defensive side of the ball either, turning three double plays (top-40 in NCAA) and recording a .974 fielding percentage (third in SWAC).

Senior Travaris Cole put on an offensive show during the opening weekend, slashing hitting .462 (fifth in SWAC) with six hits (fourth in SWAC), 9 RBI (10th in NCAA), a double and the club’s only two home runs (11th in NCAA), including a grand slam in the victory over UAPB.

Redshirt sophomore George Osborne III has played the role of closer to begin the campaign for Coach Richardson and his staff, as he’s only one of 12 players to have already picked up two saves, hurling 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and a .167 batting average against.

Senior and Preseason All-Conference First Teamer Brandon Rembert has picked up where he left off in 2019, going 4-for-11 (.364) at the dish with four walks (one intentional) and scoring five runs, the second-most in the SWAC.

Redshirt senior Jose Fernandez put his best foot forward on Opening Day, posting a new career-best nine strikeouts (fourth in SWAC) over six innings of work while surrendering only two hits and picking up the win versus Prairie View A&M.

Junior Jamey Fabre may have just two hits so far but he has proven to be clutch when it counts as both base knocks have been doubles and driven in RBIs (3).

Scouting the #17 Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss (2-1) has gotten off to the best possible start to a season without going undefeated, toppling #1 Louisville in two of its first three contests to move up eight spots from the preseason poll.

The Rebels were one of the most powerful squads in the nation during the opening weekend, clubbing four long balls in three games, just outside the top-25 throughout the NCAA.

Cael Baker stood out in particular in the series win over Louisville, earning SEC Co-Player of the Week by going 5-for-12 (.417) with two homers, five RBI and a double to go along with a slugging percentage of 1.000.

U of M also deploys Preseason All-SEC Second Teamer Tyler Keenan who led the 2019 ballclub with 15 dingers and 66 RBI while hitting .285 to as well as 72 hits, 48 walks, 39 runs scored and seven doubles.

Alcorn and Ole Miss have never faced each other in program history before their Wednesday showdown.
