Alcorn State Braves Travel For Weekend Affair At New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – In its final non-conference weekend, the Alcorn State University baseball program will face New Orleans in a three-game series at Maestri Field.

Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., while Saturday starts at 3 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.

Alcorn (4-4) is coming off a 2-2 series split against Butler last weekend. In the final game, senior Daniel Belmont threw 7.0 scoreless innings en route to a 5-1 victory. In game two of the series, the Braves used a 10-run inning to win 13-8.

The Braves are a perfect 4-0 this year when leading after seven innings. The seventh frame has been their best as they’ve outscored opponents 13-0 this season.

Senior Justin Barna and junior A.J. Makarewicz are both riding seven-game on-base streaks. As a team, Alcorn ranks second in the SWAC in on-base percentage (.359) and batting average (.259).

Junior Kirt Cormier is the team leader in batting average (.370) and slugging (.556). He opened the season hot and was named SWAC Hitter of the Week on Feb. 21 after batting for a .571 average, .625 on-base percentage and .857 slugging the opening weekend.

This weekend marks Alcorn’s second in New Orleans after playing in the MLB Youth Urban Invitational Feb. 17-19. The Braves posted a 2-1 record with wins over Prairie View A&M 11-3 and Southern 6-5.

The Privateers enters play with a 6-3 record, but have dropped three of their last four. They are coming off a 10-7 defeat to South Alabama after losing two of three to Troy over the weekend. However, UNO is 3-0 against the SWAC this year with victories over Southern 5-0, Prairie View A&M 14-0 and Jackson State 16-2.

UNO also notched a marquee win over No. 2 LSU 11-8.

The Privateers have two hitters who have started in all nine games and are hitting over .400. Samuel Capielano hits for a .424 average with a homer and nine RBI, while John Cable posts a .419 average and a team-best .514 on-base percentage.

On the mound, Shawn Semple carries a 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings, and Bryan Warzek has a 1.50 ERA in 12.0 innings.

Alcorn will open SWAC play at home when it hosts Mississippi Valley State on March 10-12.
