LORMAN, Miss. – The 24-game conference schedule begins Friday for the Alcorn State University baseball program when it hosts Mississippi Valley State in a three-game series at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium.

Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., while Saturday is slated for 3 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.

In six meetings between the two teams last year, Alcorn (4-7) posted a 4-2 record over MVSU (1-7, 0-3 SWAC) including a 3-0 mark at home.

Junior catcher Jason Sanez has been hot as of late. This past weekend at UNO, he hit for a .444 average and .778 slugging and hit a three-run homer. Sanez leads the team and ranks second in the SWAC with a .375 batting average.

After missing the first three games, junior Wallace Rios Jimenez has hit safely in all eight contests he’s played in. Rios leads the SWAC with a .500 on-base percentage. He was named to both the Preseason All-SWAC Second-Team and the Black College Nines’ HBCU Preseason Elite Second-Team. Additionally, he was on the HBCU’s 10 players to watch list.

On the mound, senior Daniel Belmont hoists a 1-0 record and 2.04 earned run average through 17.2 innings. Sophomore Carlos Lopez carries a 1.50 ERA through 12.0 innings out of the bullpen.

The Braves are a perfect 4-0 this year when leading after seven innings. They’ve outscored opponents 13-5 in the seventh inning.

The Delta Devils began league action last weekend but dropped three closely contested games against Jackson State at home. MVSU’s lone win this year came in a mid-week game on the road, 10-9 at Arkansas State.

Catcher Alex Bravo leads the team at the plate with a .400 batting average, .538 on-base percentage and .700 slugging which includes a homer. Jackson Webb has started all eight games in right field and has a .281 average with a pair of homers from the three-spot in the lineup.

Dustin Stewart has made three starts on the bump. In 15.0 innings, he has a 7.20 ERA and a 13:3 strikeout to walk ratio. Zac Uecker is also expended to start a game as he holds a 6.75 ERA in 10.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
