MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Going up against the first-place team in the SWAC East Division, the Alcorn State University baseball program will begin a three-game series Friday at 6 p.m. against Alabama State at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Alcorn (7-17, 3-6 SWAC) has been led this season by junior Wallace Rios Jimenez. He’s on a 21-game on-base streak which is tied for the longest in the conference with Wesley Drain from Grambling.

Rios ranks second in the league in on-base percentage with a .474 mark. He’s also on a six-game hitting streak and leads the Braves with a .351 batting average.

Also hitting above .300, senior Jason Sanez and junior Kirt Cormier with .319 marks. They both sat out the mid-week Nicholls series due to injuries.

Junior Der’Vincent Hamilton has been hot as of late and is on a six-game hitting streak.

On Wednesday at Nicholls, junior Patrick McMahon made his first start of the season and pitched 6.0 innings of shutout ball.

Alcorn’s biggest inning has been the eighth where it has outscored opponents 19-10.

The Hornets (11-15, 7-2 SWAC) are on a four-game winning-streak which includes a three-game sweep over Mississippi Valley State last weekend and a 6-5 result Wednesday at Florida A&M. ASU took two out of three from both Alabama A&M and Jackson State to begin SWAC play.

Cage Cox leads the team at the plate with a .405 batting average which leads the league and .583 slugging. The Hornets are expected to throw Tyler Howe, Burke Echelmeier and Terrell McCall who have combined to start 18 of the team’s 24 games.
