HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After strong pitching from Bukhari Brown through eight innings, the Alcorn State University baseball program withstood a late surge by Alabama A&M to win the conference series finale 5-4 Saturday at Bulldog Field.

Entering the bottom of the ninth with a 5-1 lead, the first two Bulldog (7-20, 4-8 SWAC) batters reached on a pair of walks. A single to left made it a 5-2 ball game and chased Brown out of the game. With Razedrick Winters now pitching for Alcorn, a fielding error juiced the bases before the senior walked in a run. The Braves (8-18, 3-9) then turned a 6-4-3 double play, but another Bulldog crossed the plate to close the gap 5-4 with a runner standing on third. After a walk put runners on the corners, Winters got the next batter to fly out to center and bring the game to a close.

Kyle Jenkins finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run, and a base on balls. Christian Acklin also went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Hunter Wilson batted 2-for-5 in the DH spot. Der’Vincent Hamilton had a 1-for-3 effort at the plate with a run and a pair of RBIs. The senior from Baton Rouge, La. drove his lone hit over the left field wall to open the scoring. Nicholas Hayes-Saltare doubled in his lone plate appearance.

Brown (1-4) grabbed his first win of the season as he held AAMU to four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks with one strikeout in 8.0 innings of work. Winters pitched the ninth, walking a pair before securing the save.

“I though Bukhari was outstanding today,” said head coach Bretton Richardson. “He was able to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes and he kept their hitters off-balance all game. I thought the defense behind him was great. Hopefully we can build off this series moving forward.”

Hamilton put Alcorn on the board as he led off the second with a solo shot to left. Hayes-Saltare then doubled to right and Brendly Martina came in to pinch run. Following a pop out to short, A.J. Makarewicz made it 2-0 with a single up the middle. The Bulldogs cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the frame. The hosts loaded the bases with three consecutive hits. The next batter grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, but it was enough for the runner to touch home.

The game turned into a defensive battle as neither team could get anything going until the top of the sixth. Jenkins started with a single to right and Wilson followed with a hit through the right side to put runners on the corners. Hamilton then brought in Jenkins on a sacrifice fly to right.

In the seventh, Acklin got to third on a single and an error by the Bulldog catcher. Rios Jimenez then skied one deep enough to center for the 4-1 advantage. The Purple and Gold scored their final run in the game in the top of the ninth as Rios Jimenez walked and came around on Jenkin’s double to left center.

Alcorn will head to Hammond, La. Tuesday for the second meeting of the season with Southeastern Louisiana. The teams will play a 6 p.m. contest at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. In the first game on Feb. 20, the Lions plated three runs in the second and two more in the third en route to a 7-1 final.
