NEW ORLEANS – The Alcorn State University baseball program won two of three games over the weekend at the MLB Urban Invitational, capped by a 6-5 victory over Southern on Sunday at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The Braves (2-1) jumped out to a four-run lead over the Jags (0-3) and then used their bullpen to hold off a comeback attempt.

Senior Patrick McMahon went two-for-three at the plate with a homer. Junior Kirt Cormier and senior Jason Sanez also tallied multi-hit games.

Senior Austin Willis-Greene (1-0) picked up the winning after striking out five in 5.1 innings. Sophomore Conrado Skepple earned the save after getting the final out of the game.

After the Jags got a run in the second inning, Alcorn took the lead with two runs in the third. It came on a two out RBI single to center field by senior Walter Vives. It scored Sanez who led off the inning with an infield single, and junior Christian Acklin who was hit by a pitch.

The Braves added two more in the fourth. McMahon led-off with a homer to right field. After Cormier knocked a hit, he advanced to second a ground out and scored on a single to centerfield by Sanez.

Alcorn tacked on another in the fifth. After an error, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, the Braves took advantage with an infield hit by Cormier to make it 5-1.

The Jags scored one in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but the Braves answered with a run in the eighth on squeeze play by junior A.J. Makarewicz which scored junior Devin Walden who came in to pinch run. He entered for junior Der’Vincent Hamilton who led-off the inning with a single to left field.

Southern scored in the eighth to make it 6-4 Alcorn. In the ninth, the Jags put together a pair of hits with two outs. After a double steal, they scored on a wild pitch. Skepple was able to get the final out of the game on a strike out to end the threat.

Alcorn will play its home opener Monday at noon when it hosts Murray State at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium.

Quoting Alcorn head coach Bretton Richardson
Opening Statement
“This was a total team effort. Our pitchers threw well, defensively we made the plays and we got just enough hitting to come out with this victory today. I was proud of the guys at how they battled, fought and scrapped, and we were able to hold on and get a win today.”

On Austin Willis-Greene
“He threw the ball well. For the most part, he only made three or four bad pitches, but Southern was able to capitalize on those. As I’ve said before, there’s a difference between control and command. Those pitches he controlled, but he threw them across the plate and those guys were able to put the ball in play. But we’re going to continue to get better.”

On Patrick McMahon
“He’s going to be a big part of what we do offensively. He’s going to hit in the middle of our lineup all season and I just want him to swing at good pitches. When he does that, good things tend to happen for him. He just has to stay consistent and not chase pitches. It will be my job to make sure he stays consistent.”

On playing the home opener Monday
“That is how baseball works; we had an emotional game tonight and now we have to flush it away in less than 24 hours and be ready to play another. We’re going to come back tomorrow and put our best foot forward and whatever happens we’ll live with the results.”
