Alcorn State Back To Jackson: Alcorn Travels To Tougaloo On Tuesday Afternoon

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University baseball program will make its second consecutive road trip to the Jackson area on Tuesday afternoon when the Braves take on the Bulldogs of Tougaloo College at 4 p.m.

Alcorn (7-19, 2-9 SWAC) has been a top-tier club in the SWAC in regard to fielding percentage (.947), home runs (16), strikeouts per nine innings (7.2) and triples (7).

Senior starting pitcher Carlos Lopez enters the game ranked third all-time in school history in career strikeouts with 207. He needs 13 more to break Steve Easter’s mark of 219 set in 2012 and two more to pass Darryl Jordan for second. He has 35 punchouts in 37.1 innings this season, good for sixth in the SWAC.

Freshman Tristin Garcia has made an immediate impact for the Braves offense, as he has the most hits (31) and total bases (44) on the team while in the top-two in average (.352), runs scored (19), doubles (5), RBIs (17), slugging percentage (.500) and on-base percentage (.418). He also paces the squad with 11 multiple-hit performances.

Senior Brandon Barna became the 48th player in school history to reach the 100-hit milestone on Saturday with a two-RBI single in the top of the sixth versus Jackson State.

Barna is tops among Braves hitters in triples (2) while being in the top-third for doubles (5), RBIs (17), homers (2), total bases (41), hits (26) and walks (10). Barna presently stands at an even 100 career base knocks which places him tied for 47th with Joel Del Grande.

Junior Brandon Rembert has been scorching hot at the dish for the purple and gold, going 22-for-52 over the club’s last 14 games which equates to a .405 batting average with 12 runs scored, six doubles, 12 RBIs and two home runs over that span. Rembert is currently fourth in the conference with an overall batting average of .371.

Redshirt junior closer Austin Atwood has put the finishing touches on a majority team’s seven victories, as he’s second in the SWAC with four saves.

Tougaloo (5-19, 5-2 GCAC) is an NAIA institution and a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

The Bulldogs enter the contest dropping six of its last seven games. Its last two contests were at fellow SWAC schools Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State, losing 13-7 and 1-0 respectively.

D’Anthony Morrow and Brandon Watson are the red and blue’s best hitters, accounting for 43% of the team’s doubles with Morrow leading the team in hits with 22.

Reliever Jacquez Hardy is the Bulldogs most reliable pitcher, as he sports 1.10 ERA over 16.1 innings thrown and is the only player on the roster with an ERA under 4.50.

Alcorn and Tougaloo split two games last season with each picking up victories on its home turf.
