NEW ORLEANS, La. – Cristopher DeGuzman laced a single through the right side with two outs in the eighth inning to put Alabama State ahead, and the Hornets held on for a 5-3 victory over Grambling State on Thursday afternoon at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament.

Alabama State (27-24) trailed 3-2 entering the eighth inning before Noel Cheneau led off the inning with a walk, before coming around to score on an Angel Jimenezdouble to right center to tie the game at 3-all. Cameron Hearn drew a two-out, full count walk to keep the inning going, before Chris Lewis walked to load the bases to set up DeGuzman’s heroics as the ball went under the glove of Trevin Boldin to put the Hornets on top.

Terrell McCall came on in the ninth inning to record a pair of strikeouts for his fourth save of the season, sending the Hornets into the winner’s bracket Friday afternoon.

The two teams traded the lead with Grambling State (25-24) grabbing the lead in the top half of the first inning, before Hearn laced a two-run double to right center to put Alabama State up 2-1 in the second inning. Grambling State scored a pair of runs in the sixth before the Hornets took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Jeremy Rivera (7-4) worked 4.1 innings in relief to pick up the win for Alabama State as he scattered a pair of hits and allowed two runs (both unearned) with seven strikeouts. Meanwhile, Bryan Delgado (6-4) suffered the loss for Grambling State as he worked 7.2 innings and allowed four runs off of seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Santiago Garcia and Eriq White each picked up two hits for Alabama State in the win, while Hearn and DeGuzman each added a pair of runs batted in – with DeGuzman adding five assists from his shortstop position.

Alabama State will face the winner of the Grambling State-Prairie View A&M game at 3 pm Friday, with the game carried on the SWAC Digital Network.
