EMERSON, Ga. – The Alabama State University baseball team exploded for a 10-run third inning and cruised to its third win of the season as the Hornets rolled to a 12-6 win over Ohio on Tuesday afternoon at the Lake Point Sports Complex.

“Burke (Echelmeier) was outstanding again and got another great outing from him,” Alabama State head coach Jose` Vazquez said. “We had excellent at-bats. When you are able to score that many runs in one inning, you mentally put pressure on the other team in which they would need 10 runs get back into the game.”

The win marked the largest margin of victory since May 19, 2016 when Alabama State defeated Alcorn State, 16-3. Also, the Hornets (3-6) improved to 74-3 since 2012 when scoring 10 or more runs.

Burke Echelmeier (2-0) picked up the win as he pitched 7.1 innings and surrendered four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Ivanniel Vazquez, Jared Drayton and Austin Bizzle pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief

After two and a half quick innings, Alabama State exploded in the bottom of the third inning with 10 runs on seven hits to grab a 10-0 lead.

Gustavo Rios, who went 3-for-4, opened the frame with a base hit to center, but was out at second on a double play by Eriq White. With two outs in the inning, Edgardo Rivera and Diandre Amion drew back-to-back walks. Carlos Ocasio, who was 2-for-5, followed with a single through the left side to plate Rivera. After a Ray Hernandez single to right scored Amion, Chris Biocic reached on an infield hit and Hunter Phillips walked to score Ocasio.

After a pitching change, Hunter Allen drew a walk to score Hernandez and Rios followed with a single through the left side to plate Phillips and Biocic. Still with two down in the inning, White reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Rivera drew a walk to plate Allen and after another pitching change, Amion, who went 3-for-4,  doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and give Alabama State a commanding 10-0 lead.

The Hornets, who pounded out 15 hits, added to the advantage with one run on three hits in the fifth.

With one down, White, who went 2-for-4, doubled to left and scored on Amion’s single to center, giving Alabama State an 11-0 lead.

In the sixth, Allen doubled and came across to score on a Rios double to right center as the Hornets extended the margin to 12-0.

Ohio (5-4) plated five runs on five hits in the eighth to trim the deficit to 12-5, but the Bobcats couldn’t recover from the 10-run third inning.

Logan Jacik (0-2) took the loss as he was tagged for six runs on four hits with three walks in 0.2 innings. Nick Kamrada, Christian Botter, Matt Mikolajczak, Derek Carr, Tom Colletti and Kenny Ogg pitched in relief.

The Hornets return to action with a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala., against UAB.
