ORMAN, Miss. – Alabama State claimed the series over Alcorn State with a doubleheader sweep of the Braves at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium Friday night.

Alabama State (9-6, 4-1 SWAC) claimed the first game of the doubleheader 10-5, before winning the nightcap 10-6. The two teams moved the series to a Friday doubleheader with weather impacting the area Saturday.

The two will conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm, with the Hornets going for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series sweep of the season.

After trailing 4-2 through six innings in the opener, Alabama State was able to get to Alcorn State starter Carlos Lopez (0-2) in the top of the seventh inning as they erupted for seven runs to take a 9-4 lead. The Hornets started the scoring with a Cristopher DeGuzman single to right that scored Chris Lewis, before they tied the game on a squeeze play from pinch hitter Oscar Prioleau to score Hunter May from third.

The Hornets took their first lead of the game at 5-4 when Yamil Pagan – who later homered – singled to center to score DeGuzman. After a wild pitch pushed the lead to 6-4, Noel Cheneau delivered with a two-run triple for the 8-4 lead. He would later score on a wild pitch for the final run of the inning.

Darrius Wright (2-0) worked 6.2 innings for the Hornets, giving up four runs (all earned) off of seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Nate Gerard came in for the final 2.1 innings and allowed a run on three hits for the Hornets.

Lewis also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in the opening win.

In the nightcap, Alabama State used a five-run third inning to pull ahead of Alcorn State 5-1 after the Braves scored a run in the first inning. Alabama State started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk to Cameron Hearn that forced Angel Jimenez in to tie the game at 1-all. They would take the lead on a three-run triple by Noel Cheneau, before an RBI groundout by Santiago Garcia rounded out the scoring in the inning.

Alcorn State answered with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to trim the lead to 5-3, and they were able to tie it in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs. The Hornets answered in the top of the seventh on a single (and fielding error) off the bat of Eriq White and an RBI single by Hearn for a 6-5 lead.

Alabama State added four more runs in the eighth to push the lead to 10-5, beginning with a two-run double by Jimenez to score DeGuzman and Trevor Jurjevich. The Hornets added two more on a two-run triple from White, scoring Pagan and Jimenez to widen the margin to five.

Darren Kelly went five innings for the Hornets but did not factor in the decision as Alcorn State scored a pair of runs after his departure. He finished with five strikeouts and allowed just three runs (one earned) off of three hits. Jeremy Rivera (2-1) picked up the win in relief, logging 3.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Terrell McCall came in to record the final two outs of the game.
