Alabama State Senior Right Hander Darren Kelly Earns SWAC Pitcher of The Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State senior right handed pitcher Darren Kelly was the named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Jackson State, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Kelly (3-0, 0.87 ERA) recorded his longest outing of the season as he went 8.0 innings in a 9-1 victory over Jackson State Saturday afternoon. The senior allowed just one run (earned) off four hits, while walking just one batter and striking out seven.

This season, he has walked just seven and struck 34 batters in 31.0 innings pitched (six starts) following Tommy John surgery last season. Kelly has allowed just five total runs, three of which have been earned on 16 hits; while opponents are hitting just .144 against him on the year.

Alabama State (13-12, 8-3 SWAC) returns to action Tuesday night at home against North Alabama with first pitch scheduled for 6 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, before hitting the road to face Jacksonville State Wednesday night. Both games will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network, with the game on Wednesday on ESPN+ in Jacksonville (Ala.).
