Alabama State Pulls Away For Conference Opening Win At Home

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Nate Gerard held Mississippi Valley State at bay for nearly five innings and Eriq Whiteled five Hornets with multiple hits, leading Alabama State to a 12-6 victory over Mississippi Valley State to open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Friday night.

Gerard (1-0), who picked up his first collegiate win, came on in relief of starter Darrius Wright in the fifth inning and pitched the remainder of the game. The senior logged 4.1 innings on the mound, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a pair of strikeouts. He relieved Wright who lasted 4.2 innings and allowed four runs off of seven hits.

White led the charge at the plate for the Hornets, finishing the night 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four more batted in for Alabama State (6-3, 1-0 SWAC). He also walked a pair of times in the win. Meanwhile, Yamil Pagan finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI; while Noel CheneauSantiago Garciaand Hunter May each picked up a pair of hits.

How it Happened
Alabama State got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after a double steal attempt in which Yamil Pagan was out at the plate. Eriq White made it safely into second and scored on an infield error off the bat of Cameron Hearn for a 1-0 lead. Hearn then stole second, and was on the move when Santiago Garcialine a ball up the middle to score the junior for a 2-0 lead. The Hornets scored another off a pair of failed pick off attempts for the 3-0 lead.

Mississippi Valley State answered in the top of the second with back-to-back doubles off the bats of Jordan Sawyer and Fredrick Spencer to trim the lead to 3-1. Spencer later scored on a wild pitch from Darrius Wright to trim the lead to 3-2.

Alabama State was able to get back on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Pagan doubled down the left field line to score Derrick Dennis and push the lead to 4-2. They added two more in the inning on a two-run double by White to score Trevor Jurjevich and Pagan, pushing the lead to 6-2.

The Delta Devils answered with a pair in the top half of the fifth inning after a Morgan Lomax double to start. Two batters later, Wendell Rieves hit a two-run home run to left center to trim the deficit to 6-4.

Alabama State answered back with five in the fifth to push the lead to 11-4, beginning with Cristopher DeGuzman scoring on a wild pitch after the Hornets loaded the bases. White followed that up with a two-run single to push the lead 9-4, before Pagan scored on the second balk of the inning to push the lead to 10-4. The Hornets added the final run of the inning on a Hearn single through the right side to score White.

Mississippi Valley State answered with a pair in the top half of the sixth inning taking advantage of leadoff walk and a wild pitch, with a double by Lomax to trim the score to 10-6.

Alabama State added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Cheneau singled to right center to score White, who advanced to second on the previous play – the third balk of the night against Mississippi Valley State to push the lead to 12-7.

What’s Next
Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State will close out their series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm. The Sunday game was moved to Saturday due to impending weather to impact central Alabama.
