GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2019 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region teams have been announced in all eight regions. The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Division I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
Alabama State had a pair of players named to the Central Region team.
Yamil Pagan was the lone selection to the First Team All-Region after he was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter and co-Player of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season. The senior finished the year hitting at a team-high .341 with 67 runs scored and 73 total hits, while also driving in 52 runs from the lead-off position. Pagan also recorded 22 extra-base hits with a team-high 14 home runs, while slugging .593 and recording an on-base percentage of .459.
Meanwhile, Santiago Garcia – a first team All-SWAC selection – was named to the All-Region Second Team after a year in which he caught every inning of the Hornets’ 54 games. The sophomore finished the season hitting .328 with 76 hits, while scoring 30 runs and driving in a team-high 63 runs on the season. Garcia also recorded 25 extra base hits that included 16 doubles and nine home runs, while recording a .513 slugging percentage and a .375 on-base percentage.
The duo helped Alabama State capture their second consecutive SWAC East Division championship, and helped the Hornets advance to their third championship game in the last four years.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 15.
The finalists for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team will be announced via Twitter on Monday, June 17, and the Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced on Wednesday, June 19. In all divisions, ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 24, followed by ABCA/Rawlings National Players of the Year on Wednesday, June 26.
