MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University baseball team will look to get back into the win column this weekend as the Hornets conclude the SWAC regular season schedule with a trip to Lorman, Miss., to take on Alcorn State.

Alabama State (24-23 overall, 15-6 SWAC) comes into the game off a win and a loss during its two mid-week games. The Hornets opened the week with a 4-3 victory at home against Jacksonville State, but couldn’t complete the rally in a 5-4 loss at UAB on Wednesday.

The Hornets, who are 6-4 in their last 10 games, have four players batting over .300.

Cage Cox leads the way with a .364 average and 63 hits. Gustavo Rios is second on the team in batting with a .315 average and eight home runs, while Diandre Amion is third with a .308 average in 143 at-bats. Joseph Estrada, who has homered in his past two games, is batting .300 and leads the team with nine home runs.

Alcorn State (11-28, 7-14) has dropped six out of its last eight games, but will enter the weekend off a 12-1 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday. The Braves were scheduled to play in Pine Bluff, Ark., on Tuesday but that game was cancelled, which gives Alcorn State a four-day break before meeting Alabama State at home.

The Hornets and Braves met March 30-April 2 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Stadium with Alabama State sweeping Alcorn State in a three-game series. Since 2009, the Hornets are 28-24 against the Braves and have won 19 straight.

Wallace Rios Jimenez leads three Braves players in batting over .300 with a .345 average. Brandon Barna is batting .325, while Kirt Cormier sits at .309.

The Hornets will send to the mound Tyler Howe on Friday and Burke Echelmeier on Saturday. Sunday’s starter is yet to be determined. Meanwhile, Alcorn State counters with Jahborus Smith on Friday, Daniel Belmont on Saturday and Carlos Lopez on Sunday.

Alabama State has already locked up the No. 2 seed from the East Division for the SWAC Baseball Tournament (May 17-23). Jackson State captured the East regular season title, while Alabama A&M and Alcorn State are battling for the third seed. The Bulldogs own the inside track for that third seed based on head-to-head results. Despite taking a game from Alabama State last weekend, Mississippi Valley State was eliminated as the SWAC takes the top four in each division.

The Hornets will open the series with the Braves on Friday at Willie E. “Rat” McGown Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
