MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A diving catch by Yamil Paganwith a pair of runners on in the seventh inning proved to be the difference Alabama State as they claimed a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series win over Alabama A&M, winning 6-5 Sunday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Alabama State (11-9, 6-2 SWAC) led 6-0 heading into the fifth inning before Alabama A&M scored five runs in the inning for the final margin, and had runners on first and second when Pierre Brewton hit a sinking line drive to left. Running full speed, with the runners in motion, Pagan dove head first and made the play to end the inning and preserve the lead for the Hornets.

The Hornets jumped ahead of Alabama A&M in the bottom of the first inning when Santiago Garcia singled home Pagan after the senior reached on a leadoff walk to give Alabama State a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the fifth inning when Alabama State erupted for four runs in the inning.

Garcia drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single to score Noel Cheneau and Eriq White to push the lead to 3-0. Chris Lewis, two batters later, drove in Cameron Hearn to push the score to 4-0; before scoring on a Hunter May double down the left field line.

Alabama State added another run in the sixth – which proved to be the game winner – on another Garcia RBI. This time, the sophomore catcher lined out to right but it was deep enough to score White from third for the 6-0 lead.

White led the Alabama State attack, which collected 13 hits, as the redshirt junior finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Cheneau, Garcia, Hearn and May each collected a pair of hits for the Hornets; with Garcia finishing with four runs batted in.

Ricardo Rivera (2-1) picked up the win for the Hornets as he finished with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing one run off of three hits. He also recorded six strikeouts as one of five pitchers used by the Hornets in the victory. Terrell McCall came on and worked the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season, giving up one hit and striking out one.

Alabama State hits the road for their next five games, beginning with a two-game series at Morehead (Ky.) State Tuesday. First pitch for the opener is scheduled for 3 pm Tuesday afternoon and the game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network.
