MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State baseball program is coming off a record-breaking season and will be looking to keep building on their past success.

The Hornets, who open the season today (Friday) with their first practice, are coming off a historic 24-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record and swept the conference tournament to win their first-ever SWAC Tournament title. Also, the championship gave Alabama State a berth into the NCAA Division I Tournament, falling to host Florida State and South Alabama in the Tallahassee Regional.

Alabama State returns eight of nine starters, including the SWAC Player of the Year (Carlos Ocasio) and Freshman of the Year (Eriq White) and seven of eight All-First Team SWAC selections.

Jose’ Vazquez has been elevated from assistant coach to head coach as he enters his first year. Vazquez has been with the program for the past six years and excited about the challenge ahead.

“I am extremely excited about this team, not only have they gelled as a unit but we also have key pieces of our team coming back, mixed along with some new talented faces,” Vazquez said. “The guys have been working very hard and have put together a great fall combined with a great spring thus far, and our coaching staff is more than excited about what this club can do this upcoming season.”

The Hornets open the 2017 season Friday, Feb. 17 in Clearwater, Fla. against Louisville. The first Alabama State home game is 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex against UAB
