MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State was picked to win the East Division and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) automatic bid by the Perfect Game, announced by the publication this week.

The Hornets, who finished 28-26, captured the East Division crown last season and locked up the top seed from the division for the conference tournament. They were able to reach the championship game for the third time in four years but fell short to Southern.

Santiago Garcia was named the preseason Player of the Year after earning first team all-conference honors in 2019. The junior caught every pitch of the season last year behind the plate and hit .328 with 16 doubles and nine home runs. He scored 30 times and drove in a team-high 63 runs a season ago. Meanwhile, Ryan Velazquez was named as relief pitcher on the preseason team after a stint at the College of Central Florida where he finished with a 2.17 earned run average.

Alabama State opens the season February 14 in New Orleans (La.) in the Andre Dawson Classic.
