Atlanta, Ga. — The Clark Atlanta University Panthers baseball team took the field as the home team at Bill Evans Field on Sunday afternoon for the first time in five weeks, as they looked to tame the visiting Claflin University Panthers. Despite being back in familiar territory on the diamond, CAU fell to Claflin in both games, 10-2 and 13-4.

Contrary to the score line for the first game, Clark Atlanta looked like they had every shot at winning the opening contest, as they headed into the sixth inning tied at two with their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SAIC) foes. A seven-run top of the sixth would quickly turn the ball game on it’s head though, as the visitors would cruise through the final two innings for the victory. Arias Smith recorded a two-run single in the bottom of the third for CAU and Jezreel Moore pitched six innings in the loss.

The two teams wasted little time in hitting the field for their second game of the day, one that had similar results for the home squad. The visitors from Claflin would use a three-run first inning and a two-run second inning to bust the game open early, as Clark Atlanta was unable to bring anybody across home plate until the bottom of the fourth. At that point, the game was 6-1 in favor of CU. CAU would bring another run across in the fifth inning, and tried to get a rally going in the seventh as they scored two more, but Claflin would hold them off in the end for the victory. Darian Taylor pitched 6.1 innings for Clark Atlanta in the loss.

The two teams will hit the diamond again tomorrow as they play the third and final game of the series, with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm at Bill Evans Field.
